Café Style Shutters: Pros vs Cons

Our fantastic café style shutters are a great and versatile product, they’re a little different to the typically popular full height window shutter. Of course, whichever the shutter type you’d like for your windows is completely up to you, but with so much variety we can’t blame you for wanting to do your research to ensure you choose the best style for your needs. So to help you out, we’ve broken it down for you with a simple, easy pros and cons list for choosing café shutters!

In case you’re completely new to the shutter-sphere, café shutters cover half of your windows rather than the full pane which other styles do. In the past, this style was commonly used inside restaurants and cafés (the name does give it away), they created a more intimate dining feel, offering guests a little privacy while they ate. Since then, people have been inspired to introduce these shutters into their homes, they’ve become increasingly popular alongside the more traditional choice of full height plantation shutters.

Pros of Café Style Shutters

So, let’s start off with what everyone wants to know, the amazing benefits of choosing café shutters – which to us is endless! Firstly, a great point to take note of is that they are the ideal shutter style to start with. If you’re new to the fantastic world of shutters and have only just started to dive in, they are smaller in size which makes them slightly cheaper than any of the larger shutter panels. Of course it depends on the size of the window you’re planning on fitting them to, but they are a great window treatment to invest in before going the whole mile and purchasing either full height or tier on tier shutters.

Secondly, half shutters are excellent for bay windows, a great compliment that can emphasise such a standout window layout. Covering only half the window protects your privacy, especially on street facing rooms, but at the same time will keep the top half of the window pane exposed to allow light to beam in – that’s great for both practicality and some fabulous style!

Lastly, choosing café style shutters for your windows ensures super easy maintenance, shortening that list of chores down for you – hurray! Unlike curtains which normally need to be taken to the dry cleaners or thrown in your washing machine to be kept clean, all our shutters really require is a wipe down with a damp cloth and you’re all done! So, with café shutters, that cleaning time is halved due their shortened height.

Cons of Café Style Shutters

It is important to remember that when you buy half shutters you’re getting exactly that – half the height of a full height shutter. So, if you are looking for a window treatment that covers the entire glass pane these aren’t going to be the shutters for you.

Alternatively, you could opt for one of our other versatile options, tier on tier shutters. These shutters are separated into two different sections, you can shut the bottom panel whilst keeping the top open, a café shutter feel with the difference being that the set of shutters can be completely closed when desired – you can read our pros and cons of tier on tier shutters.

But of course, in our eyes we love café shutters and think they’re an excellent choice if they meet your requirements.
